Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to alleviate the symptoms of many conditions and to promote a feeling of good health and well being. Acupuncture works by triggering the release of endorphins and serotonin in the brain and central nervous system. These chemicals, endorphins and serotonin, have a strong effect on a person’s mood and the feelings they have, they can make you feel down and in pain or happy and pain free.

The traditional method behind the treatment is to accentuate the flow of “qi”, which is believed to be the bodies natural flow of energy. Today qi is used more like a metaphor and acupuncture is one of the most well known, and most widely used treatments in a complementary fashion.

How is acupuncture carried out?

Acupuncture is carried out by hundreds of small needles being inserted into special points in the body, these points are known as acupuncture points and are located along meridian lines where qi is supposed to flow likes streams, rivers and seas. In the body there are hundreds, if not thousands of acupuncture points, all of which are related to different medical conditions and used for alleviating different symptoms. The points are found by an acupuncture therapist feeling for pulses in the body, mostly around the organs, this will help them determine which acupuncture points to use.

What is acupuncture used for?

Acupuncture has been used for a wide variety of medical conditions for a few millennia, today we use acupuncture for medical conditions like asthma, high blood pressure, pain, headaches, digestive problems and women’s menstrual problems.

Are there any adverse effects from acupuncture?

Overall acupuncture is a very safe treatment, especially when carried out by a qualified medical professional. When carrying out acupuncture it is important to make sure that needles are sterilized so infection does not occur. After treatment many people feel effects differently, while some may be energetic and vibrant, others may be drowsy and tired, for this reason it is important to make sure that you do not drive or operate heavy machinery.

When inserting needles into the body, the medical professional will be very careful, because if care is not taken then damage to tissue, muscle and organs can occur. If a female is pregnant then special care need to be taken as there has been proven scientific research that shows some acupuncture points can induce labor.

Summary

There are many acupuncture practitioners throughout the world who can carry out the treatment correctly, if done correctly a patient may feel positive effects to their medical condition. With acupuncture there is a lot of uncertainty over its strength to act as a medication or treatment that can resolve a persons condition, but even if it cant treat a condition it does act as a great placebo because of its effects on a persons levels of serotonin and endorphins.

Even if you’re unsure about the possibilities of acupuncture resolving your medical problems, it can be a relaxing experience if nothing else.

The war can commence at any time; the onslaught of anxiety can catch many innocent civilians off guard. Anxiety has a tendency to take over people, who have a lot of stress in their life, this stress can be the cause of relationship problems, financial worry, work related stress, losing a loved one or being involved in a large event that caused a lot of trauma.

Many people suffer with mild anxiety in their everyday lives due to simple things like being late for work or having to speak out loud at a presentation, what sets this apart from the attack of anxiety is the fact that these people can control the anxiety they feel, and that the mild affects only last for a short period of time.

When a person starts losing the war with anxiety they will become quiet, lose interest in social activities, find excuses to stay at home and stop people from visiting them. The anxiety affects them so much that they may not even remember what caused the anxiety in the first place.

The problem with anxiety is that it breeds with itself, anxiety has a habit of causing more anxiety, this causes a huge problem when trying to identify the cause as it may be something long forgotten from days past that now bears no relevance on the sufferers life.

It can be a trying time coping with anxiety, as many sufferers become reclusive they lose touch with reality and start to have feelings that could be classed as border line depression. These feelings make them feel like life is not worth living and can cause suicidal thoughts in those worst affected.

There are ways of combating the affects of anxiety, some of these can be self-medicated like meditation, breathing exercises and simple relaxation techniques, the other treatments are medically prescribed, these normally come in the form of medication given to those suffering with depression. This type of medication is used because it can control the serotonin levels (serotonin helps control your mood) within the central nervous system.

Living with someone who has anxiety can also be very difficult as the suffer may find it awkward to live with others; this can cause the break down in relationships. It is common for sufferers to jeopardize their relationships through their loss of sex drive, lack of trust and lack of will for anything to succeed.

To Summarize

Anxiety is a dangerous condition. Although it may not be a condition that kills, it is a condition that can change your life forever. If you know of someone who suffers with anxiety, the best position you could take with him or her is to be patient and supportive.

If you notice the mood of a friend or family member start to diminish try talking to them, this way you may be able to find out what is causing their anxiety and help them find a way to alleviate the issue and return to normality.

Anxiety is an awful condition, lets work together to try and alleviate the issues it causes.

Acupuncture has been a medicinal treatment for well over five thousand years, starting with the ancient Chinese, its founders. What hasn’t been documented for over 5,000 years is exactly why acupuncture works so well.

Acupuncture is carried out by lots of little needles being inserted into numerous points in the body that are deemed important by the ancient Chinese, these are called acupuncture points. When acupuncture is carried out correctly the patient can expect to have hundreds of needles inserted.

The ancient Chinese believed that acupuncture helped redirect the flow of Qi, which they believed to be the body’s natural energy. The belief was that an ailment was a lack of Qi reaching that part of the body for one reason or another.

How does acupuncture work then?

In recent years a group of Chinese medical scientists wanted to show that acupuncture does work, and show exactly how it works, and the results were astounding.

The scientists showed that when the acupuncture needles are inserted into a patient in the correct manner, where the needles are turned when they are in, the patient would feel a slight dull aching sensation; it is at this point the central nervous system becomes stimulated.

When the nervous system becomes stimulated in this manner it has been shown that the limbic system, which is actually part of the pain network and is located in the brain, becomes deactivated. Because the limbic system deactivates, many people who are suffering with pain feel the pain subside or even go away totally. It is important to note that the pain is still in the body and the pain receptors are sending signals to the central nervous system, but it means the signal doesn’t get through to the part of the brain, which tells you that you are in pain.

Many scientists found this to be an interesting step forward as they had always known that acupuncture has a positive effect on the brain, they just were not sure what the effect was.

It is important to note that these effects only happen when the acupuncture needles are inserted at least one centimeter into the skin, this means that it needs to be performed by someone who is qualified to do so. If the needles are not inserted correctly great damage can occur to internal tissue and organs.

Summary

It seems that the ancient Chinese found a great alternative medicine which they thought worked for reasons different to those that make it so effective.

Acupuncture is a great remedy to a number of different medical conditions, some physical, some physiological, either way if you are having issues with a medical condition and feel like finding an alternative method in treating the problem, acupuncture is certainly the treatment to choose.

Acupuncture deserves a lot of credit, we all have to remember that it has been used for over five thousands years, and the method of acupuncture we use today is the same as the one written by scholars two thousand years ago during the time of Chinese philosophy.

Anxiety is an overall feeling of fear or apprehension, it can come on at any time and affects different people in different scenarios. Some people have the ability of controlling their anxiety, or only having bouts of anxiety on very rare occasions, but for some sufferers anxiety can have a big impact on their every day life.

Causes of anxiety

Mental conditions

Unlike a lot of medical conditions, anxiety can affect a person due to mental or physical reasons and even outside influences like drug abuse.

Mental conditions that cause anxiety are panic disorder (panic attacks), phobic disorders (phobias), stress disorders (large amounts of stress).

Physical conditions

Physical conditions like heart abnormalities, overactive thyroid conditions, various lung conditions, generally any physical condition affecting the heart, lungs or central nervous system can all cause anxiety in a patient, the anxiety is not due to the patients feelings about the condition but can be a secondary affect of the condition itself.

Common outside influences

There are many external factors that can cause anxiety; stress caused by every day life is one. Other factors are emotional trauma, caffeine (drinking excessive amounts of coffee), the side affects from long-term medication, and shortness of breath.

Symptoms of anxiety

There are many different symptoms people feel from anxiety, most of which are felt in the lungs, heart and nervous system. The majority of sufferers will feel their heart beating fast and palpitating, they will feel a shortness of breath and can even feel their body turn cold.

Many sufferers will feel so scared that they have to run out of what ever situation they are in. It has been known for people to be in a perfectly normal situation yet feel a panic attack to take hold and have to leave the place they are in without any forewarning.

When should a sufferer seek medical advice

Should bouts of anxiety last for prolonged periods or happen on a regular basis then medical advice should be sought as it can start to affect the way a sufferer carries out their everyday activities. The medical professional may be able to prescribe medication that can reduce the occurrences and strength of the attacks.

If the anxiety attacks become extremely frequent and are very strong in intensity then the sufferer should seek medical attention from a hospital straight away as it may mean there is a more serious underlying medical problem.

Advice to anxiety sufferers

While you have an attack of anxiety it can make you feel like you are going to die, this is far from what will happen, if you manage to control yourself long enough the feelings will pass.

If you have not told a loved one or a friend about your anxiety then it may be worth speaking to them so if a bad episode takes place they understand what is happening, if you don’t tell them and an episode causes you to run off or act in a strange manner due to the situation your in, they may become emotional.

Alcohol and health effects of alcohol on the body can be short term or long term effects. The consumption of alcohol and health related problems can occur over a short time frame, while other conditions and long term effects of alcohol on the body may only happen following years of alcohol abuse.

Alcohol comes into direct contact with the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach and intestines as well as being absorbed into the bloodstream. Health problems can begin as headaches, feeling nauseated, sore throat or indigestion. However, if alcohol abuse continues, these and other alcohol and health symptoms can develop into more serious illnesses and diseases.

Here are examples of short term health effects of alcohol on the body:

• Nausea, Vomiting, Dizziness, Hangovers – excessive alcohol consumption can result in the body trying to protect itself by getting rid of the alcohol and vomiting. Alcohol and health and the central nervous system are related since alcohol affects a person’s sense of balance and orientation, leading to a feeling of nausea and/or dizziness. Hangovers are partly due to the body’s dehydration caused by alcohol consumption, and hangover effects of alcohol on the body may be felt a few hours after consuming alcohol.

• Loss of Muscle Control – slurred speech is one of the effects of alcohol on the body. Impaired judgement and poor coordination are alcohol and health effects that can lead to falls and accidents.

• Adverse Interactions with Medications – alcohol is known to interact negatively with at least 100 medications. For example, antihistamines taken with alcohol can increase the drowsiness that this medication by itself can cause. Large doses of the painkiller acetaminophen taken together when consuming alcohol increases the risk of liver damage.

• Pregnancy Risks – alcohol can cause numerous birth defects, the most serious being fetal alcohol syndrome. Babies born with fetal alcohol syndrome will have physical abnormalities, mental impairment and problems with behavior. To avoid negative alcohol and health effects during pregnancy, do not drink alcohol during pregnancy as no one knows exactly how much alcohol causes birth deffects.

Because alcohol and health effects can involve many organs in the body, long-term heavy drinking puts you at risk for developing serious health conditions and illnesses. Here are examples of long term effects of alcohol on the body:

• Liver Inflammation and Cirrhosis of the Liver – liver inflammation symptoms include abnormal yellowing of the skin, eyeballs and urine, fever and abdominal pain. And in the case of cirrhosis, as many as one in five heavy drinkers will develop cirrhosis of the liver. Alcohol is especially harmful to the liver since the liver is needed to metabolize alcohol. Alcohol destroys liver cells, and it destroys the ability of the liver to regenerate new cells.

• Cancer – long term heavy drinkers increase their risk for certain forms of cancer such as cancer of the mouth, throat and esophagus and colon.

• Heart disease – long term heavy drinking increases a person’s risk for developing high blood pressure and heart disease.

• Pancreaitis – long term heavy drinking can result in developing inflammation of the pancreas, called pancreaitis. The pancreas are needed for food digestion, and pancreaitis symptoms include severe abdominal pain and weight loss. Pancreaitis can be life-threatening.

Additional long term negative alcohol and health effects on the body include damage to the brain, nerve damage, bleeding in the esophagus, erectile dysfunction in men, insomnia and depression. If you’d like to learn more about alcoholism stages and warning signs, there are proven resources available that can help. It is never too late to begin recovery from alcohol addiction.

As our world becomes increasingly more stressful, a growing number of people are suffering from the turmoil of insomnia. Studies from the National Sleep Foundation lead researchers to believe that the majority of those suffering from this very real problem result from hectic, stressful lives. Before turning to addictive medications and sleep aids, try some more natural solutions that tackle the problem at its source.

Use a White Noise Machine While you Sleep
A white noise machine works by creating a natural, consistent sound that drowns out intruding noises in the environment that can interfere with falling asleep or maintaining a deep sleep. The sound of a white noise machine is appealing to the human ear without being distracting, and can fill the empty silence that often leads to racing thoughts of worry and anxiety.

White noise machines work by combining every frequency audible to the human ear and playing it simultaneously to create a gentle hum. The sound is similar to that of a fan without the faint clanking or knocking sounds. Because it contains frequencies of all ranges, the sound works to block out individual noises and distractions such as snoring, traffic, loud breathing, and other nighttime noises that cause insomnia.

Take a hot bath before bed
A hot bath has real physiological effects on the body that can help induce sleep. The warm water causes the blood vessels to dilate and reduces blood pressure. When your body meets the cooler air after the bath, your heart rate increases then naturally falls over an hour or so, inducing sleepiness.

Try adding some lavender to your bath for added serenity. Lavender has long been used as a calming agent. Just a few drops of its deep, soothing scent in your bathwater naturally evokes a sense of tranquility. Experiments have shown that the inhalation of lavender can slow the central nervous system and increase feelings of peacefulness.

Turn off TV an hour or two before bed
The television can be an assault on the mind and senses. The constant barrage of stimulus on television can be a major cause of stress and restlessness. Many media messages work by consciously or subconsciously subjecting the viewer to negative side affects to entice us to buy the solution. The popularity of 24 hour news programs has resulted in a steady stream of troublesome and often horrifying information.

In many households, the TV remains on all day and is the last thing turned off at night. Try turning off the television an hour or so before bed. Enjoy the peace and tranquility of your home with some hot, decaffeinated herbal tea and relaxing music. Let the marketing messages, canned laughter, and terrifying images melt away from your conscious mind so that when it’s time to go to bed, you are relaxed and at peace.

According to numerous studies, most insomnia is cause by a stressful lifestyle and is not a medical condition. The trouble with pills and sleep aids is that they only cover up the problem and become addictive as the body requires higher dosage levels to achieve the desired results. The majority of those suffering from insomnia will benefit greatly from simple, wholesome solutions that result in a natural vibrancy and a balanced life.

There are many medical benefits of acupuncture as acupuncture has been used for millennia to treat the symptoms of many diseases and health conditions as well as to promote good health and well-being.

To determine the medical benefits of acupuncture in the treatment of your condition you must speak with a qualified practitioner of acupuncture. He or she will want to know your entire medical history including any allergies you have and what illnesses and injuries you have suffered in the past. Only after knowing these things can a potential form of treatment be decided on?

Acupuncture works by triggering the release of endorphins and serotonin in the brain and central nervous system. These chemicals, endorphins and serotonin have a strong affect on a persons mood and the feelings they have, they can make you feel up, down, in pain or happy and pain free.

The traditional method behind the treatment is to accentuate the flow of “qi”, which is believed to be the bodies natural flow of energy. Today qi is used more like a metaphor and acupuncture is one of the most well known, and most widely used treatments in a complementary fashion.

* What is acupuncture used for?

Acupuncture has been used for a wide variety of medical conditions for a few millennia, today we use acupuncture for medical conditions like asthma, high blood pressure, pain, headaches, digestive problems and women’s menstrual problems.

According to the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) there are a number of health problems that can be improved upon by the use of acupuncture. These conditions are broken down into respiratory diseases, bronchopulmonary diseases, eye disorders, disorders that affect the cavity of the mouth, orthopedic disorders, gastrointestinal disorders and neurological disorders.

The respiratory diseases that acupuncture can help include acute sinusitis, acute rhinitis, acute tonsillitis and the common cold. Acute bronchitis and bronchial asthma are both bronchopulmonary diseases that acupuncture has been shown to have great results in treating.

The eye disorders acupuncture helps include acute conjunctivitis, cataract that has no complications, myopia, and central retinitis.

The mouth cavity disorders acupuncture helps include toothaches, gingivitis, pharyngitis, and pain or discomfort that sometimes takes place after a tooth is pulled. The orthopedic disorders acupuncture helps include periarthritis humeroscapularis, tennis elbow, lower back pain, rheumatoid arthritis and sciatica.

Acupuncture also improves gastrointestinal disorders as well as neurologic disorders. The gastrointestinal disorders it helps include hiccups, gastroptosis, spasms that take place in the cardia and the esophagus, gastric hyperacidity, acute and chronic gastritis, chronic duodenal ulcer, acute bacterial dysentery, acute as well as chronic colitis, constipation, diarrhea, and paralytic ileus.

The neurologic disorders it helps include headaches and migraines in particular, facial paralysis, trigeminal neuralgia, peripheral neuropathy, meniere’s syndrome, intercostals neuralgia, nocturnal enuresis, paralysis after an apoplectic fit, neurogenic bladder dysfunction, and paralysis that is caused by poliomyelitis.

* How is acupuncture done?

Acupuncture is a widespread medical technique used around the world for treating various ailments of human body. Even though it has its origins in the traditional Chinese medicine, many countries of the world have adopted this as an alternative medical system and have started regulating this activity.
Acupuncture – a Chinese word which can be translated as “needle prick”. In this technique, various vital parts of the human body are stimulated using very fine, slender needles to correct the energetic imbalance of the human body, so that its natural healing ability is restored. Even though this may sound very strange, but various scientific studies and practical evidences have proved its worth in promoting better health and alleviate pain and sufferings.
Acupuncture may be considered as natural treatment for migraine related ailments because it is found to restore the vital energy of the body by reducing stress and anxiety levels. Its practitioners claim that several acupuncture points are richly supplied with nerve endings. Sticking needles into certain parts of the human body affects the nervous system and enables the body to produce natural pain killing chemicals like endorphins and enkephalins. Some other theories claim that it stops the transmission of pain signals to central nervous system from different parts of your body.
Although this treatment promises to be a pain relieving and natural healing method, there are certain concerns reported in the medical studies which indicate that there are some side effects associated with its use. Various surveys conducted on the patients who received this treatment have revealed that there is a remote possibility of suffering minor bleeding, bruises and dizziness. But these symptoms will disappear after few days only.
Hence people who are considering this treatment must understand the limitations associated with it and should consult a reputed, licensed practitioner. Another important fact is that this kind of therapy needs skilled practitioners who have undergone a prescribed educational program and have the license to practice.
Most of the modern medicines have some or the other side effects, where as acupuncture is supposed to be a natural healing method. Hence this treatment can be considered as an alternative cure for headaches. It is observed that the incidences of adverse effects are considerably lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the headaches.

Chinese medicine is responsible for a number of natural therapies, and acupuncture is probably the best known of them. Basically, acupuncture works on the theory that your body contains energy centers at specific, strategic points. These energy centers are then linked to a particular part of the body. If you have a sore knee, for example, then the acupuncturist would locate the energy center links to that knee. This could well be located in a completely different part of the body. That’s the point where very thin needles are then inserted to stimulate the energy center. The result? The pain in your knee is reduced or removed entirely, by accessing the central nervous system through the acupuncture point.

Acupuncture is used to treat many conditions, but pain relief is the most common. It’s an odd concept – inserting needles into your body to reduce pain! But plenty of people find acupuncture. It’s believed that as well as stimulating energy centers, acupuncture stimulates the production of endorphins, known as “feel good” chemicals, which also helps reduce the pain.

Other research has shown that acupuncture can assist the immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells. It’s also been shown that Alpha, Beta and Gamma Globulins increase after acupuncture therapy, and these assist in fighting infection and producing immune antibodies. Recently, acupuncture has been used to assist people recovering from alcohol and drug addiction. Acupuncture focuses on reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms, tension, and inducing a feeling of relaxation.

Sports people at the highest level have turned to acupuncture therapy to help improve both their training and performance. Muscle tension inhibits performance, and acupuncture releases tension in both muscles and the surround tissue, as well improving the efficiency of the nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. Acupuncture can also be used to speed up recovery rates from injury and manage pain.

Allergies also respond well to acupuncture therapy. Harmless substances can cause the immune system to overreact, leading to an allergic reaction. Many allergies are triggered by common environmental factors such as dust, pollen and chemicals. Many people also suffer from food allergies, which can be triggered by wheat, milk and shellfish, amongst other things. Allergies are uncomfortable – stuffy nose, watery eyes and sneezing. In some sufferers, allergy reaction can result in extreme symptoms such as kidney problems, joint pain and depression. Detoxifying the body and strengthening the immune system with acupuncture helps reduce or eliminate allergic reactions.

Many people turn to acupuncture therapy for more serious issues, such as bronchitis, asthma, hypertension and ulcers. Western medicine struggles to understand how acupuncture manages to be so effective, but the results speak for themselves. Some suggest that believing acupuncture will work is the reason it does, but that hasn’t been proven. Sometimes, for more chronic conditions, massage and herbal remedies are used together with acupuncture therapy.

Other health issues that often respond well to acupuncture include PMS, chronic fatigue syndrome, stress, menopause and menstruation problems. If you’re interested in trying acupuncture therapy, find yourself a reputable local practitioner, then ring and have a chat with them about your health problems. This will give them the opportunity to say whether or not they think acupuncture can help you. The only way to know for sure is to give it a go.

Acupuncture, a safe alternative to pain relief treatments, clears the blockage of vital energy within pathways in the body. These pathways are called meridians and each is linked to a specific organ or organ system. Acupuncture is more effective than traditional drug therapies because it treats the cause and effect of pain.

Acupuncture can help relieve pain caused by physical trauma, muscle or bone weakness, injury, poor posture, physical strain or other factors. Pain caused by or associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, migraine or stress headaches, back pain and even cancer can all be treated effectively using this ancient Chinese therapy.

To ensure you receive the maximum benefit from your acupuncture therapy, you need to describe your pain as accurately as possible. In other words, your Acupuncturist will want to know when the pain started, whether or not it is constant or intermittent, whether it is the result of an injury or other physical trauma, etc. Different treatment points may be selected for different types of pain. When your Acupuncturist has accurate information, your treatment therapy will be more effective and you will experience pain relief in the shortest amount of time.

There are three primary steps in the acupuncture pain relieving process. The first step involves stimulating organs that correspond to the specific pain. This step produces energy and blood flow which nourish the whole body and specifically the area experiencing pain. The second step is to identify the meridian to tap into. The final step in the process is to determine the points of needle insertion to target the painful area.

The needles the Acupuncturist uses are stainless steel and about the thickness of a human hair. They are inserted into specific treatment points in the human body, which then send a message to the central nervous system. When the central nervous system receives the signal, the brain releases endorphins, a natural brain chemical that helps in pain suppression.

A plan by your Acupuncturist will be personalized for you based on the nature of your pain, i.e., radiating, chronic, etc., and the source of the pain, e.g., injury, disease, etc., plus your medical history. When the needles are inserted during the acupuncture treatments, they will remain in place for several minutes. The duration of the treatment will be determined based on how quickly you respond to the treatments. The number of sessions could be very few to extending over several weeks before you experience complete pain relief.

Pain killers, anti-inflammatory drugs or muscle relaxants only provide temporary pain relief so must be used repeatedly and can have numerous adverse side effects. Acupuncture provides long-term alleviation of pain without the use of chemicals or ingredients that may negatively impact your health or interact with other treatment protocols. Because no drugs are used, acupuncture does not have debilitating side effects often experienced with over-the-counter and prescription drugs.

It takes time to restore energy systems to their properly balanced state. While not an instant cure, some symptoms may be diminished after the first application of acupuncture therapy. The number of acupuncture treatments required for complete pain relief will depend on how long you have been experiencing the pain, the cause of the pain, and how quickly your body responds to the treatments.

With no adverse side effects, acupuncture can be considered a completely safe alternative for pain relief. It is truly a holistic approach to pain relief, treating not only the pain but also the cause of the pain.
