<p> Experts say that not only does prolonged sleep deprivation wear down immune protection but getting adequate rest can help boost your immune defenses. Make sure you get enough sleep and go to bed at a reasonable hour. During cold and flu season give your immune defenses an extra boost by getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night. </p>
<p> Since your body regenerates, repairs and renews itself while sleeping, it is important to include &#8220;quiet time&#8221; as part of your day when you can unwind and learn the value of being calm. Try and listen to peaceful music at some point during your day. </p>
<p> Take this time to relax and be happy even if it is for only 20-30 minutes a day. This will aid in your immune protection. It is worth every minute!</p>
<p> Even though we don&#8217;t know the exact mechanism by which sleep impacts immunity, we do know that a lack of it prevents the body from repairing cells. And when we skip that important physiological step, we reduce our immune defenses and get sick more easily.</p>
<p> What Affects Immune protection? Much like soldiers who grow weary in battle, your immune cells can also lose some of their protective effects when your body is constantly battling poor health habits. </p>
<p> As such, it&#8217;s not surprising that doctors frequently recommend certain lifestyle changes as a way to optimize the function of your immune defenses.</p>
<p> The most important thing you can do for your immune protection is to achieve lifestyle balance and adopt the fundamentals of healthy living. This will give your immune system what it needs to function at optimal capacity.</p>
<p> At the top of that balance list: reducing stress. There is overwhelming evidence that stress and the substances secreted by the body during stress negatively impacts your immune protection.</p>
<p> The good news is that lowering your stress can help your body maintain both your physical and your emotional health. People who have less stress are simply healthier overall.</p>
<p> In addition to what you eat, certain lifestyle changes can boost your immune defenses, including: <br /> Washing your hands thoroughly and often with soap and warm water, particularly before eating and after using the bathroom. </p>
<p> This reduces the number of organisms that can enter your body. Cooking meat thoroughly to kill dangerous bacteria and other microorganisms. </p>
<p> Getting at least 8 hours of sleep every day, deep sleep stimulates and energizes the immune system. Maintaining a healthy weight, obesity can lead to weakened immune protection. </p>
<p> Exercising at least 30 minutes most days of the week. Physical activity stimulates the immune defenses and helps with weight maintenance or reduction. </p>
<p> Consuming alcohol moderately, if you drink alcohol, little and often will do you the most good. If you drink to much it can dramatically decrease your immune protection. </p>
<p> People who regularly drink small amounts of alcohol tend to live longer than people who don&#8217;t drink at all. Alcohol helps prevent coronary heart disease in people who are at a stage of life when coronary heart disease is a risk. </p>
<p> For men this is over the age of 40 and for women it&#8217;s after the menopause. The health benefits come from regularly drinking small amounts; the maximum benefit is achieved by drinking between one and two units of alcohol a day. </p>
<p> Eating less sugar, 100 grams of sugar, the amount in one 12-ounce can of regular soda, can reduce the ability your immune defenses to kill germs by 40 percent for up to 5 hours! </p>
<p> Give up smoking, it is the biggest single risk to your health after inactivity. Smokers have shorter lives due to lung cancer, cancer of the bladder, mouth and other organs, heart disease, bronchitis, asthma and other conditions. </p>
<p> And it&#8217;s not just lungs and hearts that are at risk, smoking will also slow down your rate of healing and weaken your immune protection. That&#8217;s bad news if you need an operation or injure yourself. </p>
<p> Be positive, this gives us a rosier view of life, and boosts our immune defenses as well. Every day, spend 20 minutes focused on a really uplifting thought or memory &#8211; you will feel better and your immune protection will get a boost.</p>
<p> All of these are possible kinds of behaviors you can change or focus on to boost your immune protection. Of course, there are things out of our control, such as genes and family histories, but if people incorporate healthier patterns into their daily living, they increase the likelihood for better health.</p>

<p> The word &#8216;arthritis, which literally means &#8216;inflammation of the joint, is used to describe a group of distinct diseases. These conditions all have in common symptoms of pain, swelling, and stiffness of the joints and the tissues surrounding them. <br /> Back pain is very common. How many times have you lifted something that was too heavy and felt the effects for days? Back pain is one of the leading causes of disability and loss of work in the United States. Arthritis is one possible cause of back pain.</p>
<p> Causes of Lumbosacral Arthritis</p>
<p> The exact cause of lumbar and lumbosacral arthritis is unknown. Some degeneration of the spine is thought to be the result of the normal aging process, but sometimes an old injury or a direct blow to the spine will play a role. Also, people whose occupations require heavy lifting, long periods of sitting or driving, or other repetitive pressures on the backbone are also at risk for arthritis in this part of the spine.</p>
<p> Symptoms of Lumbar and Lumbosacral Arthritis</p>
<p> Pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints are the most common symptoms of all types of arthritis. With lumbosacral arthritis, the pain may be concentrated in the pelvic region or between the lower rib cage and buttocks. Low back pain is associated with leg pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs. Often it results in change in posture. This can lead to pain in other weight-bearing joints such as the knee, hip and ankle.</p>
<p> Treatment</p>
<p> Proper treatment can provide relief from the pain. There are remedies that can help you control this pain. While many people with chronic low back pain are tempted to limit their physical activity and exercises, this is ill advised. You may find that you need to rest more frequently, but exercise should become part of your daily regimen. By increasing physical fitness, your back may become stronger and you may increase your overall feeling of well-being. You should work with your doctor or physiotherapist on developing an exercise program designed to strengthen your lower back.</p>
<p> Physical Therapy</p>
<p> orthopedic patients typically have a deficiency that needs to be addressed. For example, patients with carpal tunnel syndrome may have weakness of specific hand muscles that require targeted exercises. Or knee conditions such as chondromalacia may be due in part to muscle imbalance around the knee joint. A physical therapist can teach exercises that specifically target these muscles to improve function and decrease problems.</p>
<p> Alternative Treatments</p>
<p> Alternative treatments include acupuncture, massage, magnet therapy, natural remedies, and others. There is no doubt that many patients find significant relief from these types of treatments. While the scientific studies are lacking to support these treatments, most have few side-effects and are reasonable treatments to attempt.</p>
<p> Surgery</p>
<p> Surgical procedures for lumbar and lumbosacral arthritis are relatively rare. Still, they may be considered in the event that conservative therapy does not bring about sufficient pain relief. Open surgery, using general anesthesia, may be recommended for selected patients. A technique known as a laminectomy is often used in cases of spinal stenosis &#8212; a condition related to arthritis of the spine &#8212; to widen the area available to the spinal cord. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="articletext">During childhood, a good night&#8217;s sleep is one of the most important things that a child can have &#8211; in fact, childhood experts agree that young children typically need between nine to ten hours a night in order to encourage proper body and development function. Yet if your child has trouble sleeping through the night, this can often seem like an impossible goal; however, you&#8217;re not alone. Thanks to the popularity of stimulating technology in the home, like video games, computers and mp3 players, more and more children are finding it difficult to sleep through the night due to overstimulation. Add to the fact that many children are consuming diets full of sugar and carbs, and you have a recipe for a night full of tossing and turning!</p>
<p>     </br>  Want to get your child to stop his or her sleepless nights and get the nine to ten hours that child experts recommend for ideal overall growth and health? Just follow these tips and your child will be off to dreamland in no time!</p>
<p> 1. Limit the amount of time that your child spends in front of the computer or television set before bedtime. Just like with adults, children who spend the two hours up until their bedtime performing &#8220;overstimulating&#8221; activity can have difficulty falling asleep due to too much brain activity. Tell your child that there will be no video or computer games allowed before bedtime, and stick to this rule. You should notice a difference in your child&#8217;s sleeping patterns almost immediate.</p>
<p> 2. Have a consistent bedtime, even on the weekends. A child&#8217;s body clock is a delicate thing, and can easily be disrupted if your child sleeps in too much on the weekends or goes to bed too late at night. Have your child go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday &#8211; if your child has exhibited particularly good behavior, award him or her by pushing back bedtime by an hour and a half; however don&#8217;t go any more than this, or you&#8217;ll disrupt your child&#8217;s body clock!</p>
<p> 3. Have your child&#8217;s bedroom be used specifically for sleep only. If your child spends his or her time on the bed playing video or computer games, he or she will associate the bed with fun activities. Create an environment in the child&#8217;s bedroom that encourages sleep &#8211; for example, don&#8217;t have a computer in your child&#8217;s bedroom, avoid leaving bright lights on and keep the bedroom at a cool temperature. The goal is to have your child realize that going to bed is equated to falling asleep, so try to prevent other activities from being done in your child&#8217;s sleeping environment.</p>
<p> 4. Avoid feeding your child a diet of mainly sugar and carbs. Sugar will cause your child to become hyperactive, which is especially detrimental towards getting a full night&#8217;s sleep. Carbs are still necessary for a child&#8217;s diet, but avoid feeding your son or daughter only carbs a few hours before bedtime, since this slowly burns off energy that will keep your child awake.</p>
<p> 5. Get your child to exercise during the afternoon, as this will make his or her body tired just in time for bed. However, don&#8217;t exercise within a few hours of bedtime, or else your child will still be on an energy high!</p>
<p> Getting your child to sleep through the night doesn&#8217;t have to become a production. Just follow these simple tips for maximum effect, and your precious angel will soon be getting the nine to ten hours required for his or her healthy development.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="articletext">You have a new baby, oh what wonder and joy this little guy or gal is, however, you have not had a good night&#8217;s sleep since being home with this wonderful little creature. Don&#8217;t give up. You can help your new baby sleep all night, every night. And remember, you are certainly not alone. Sleepless nights are something common for most new parents.</p>
<p>     </br>  Newborn babies often sleep 16 or more hours per day. Their sleep time, however, is often done in stretches of just one to two hours at a time. As your baby&#8217;s nervous system matures a more consistent sleep schedule emerges and he or she can go longer between feedings.</p>
<p> By the time your new baby reaches three months of age he or she will probably be sleeping for as long as five hours during the night. At six months of age, nighttime stretches of nine to 12 hours are most likely.</p>
<p> Look over the following tips to help your baby become a good sleeper:</p>
<p> &#8226; Encourage activity during the day: During the waking hours with your baby keep him or her busy by talking, singing and playing. Provide your baby with lots of light. This type of stimulation during the day can help promote better sleep at night.</p>
<p> &#8226; Monitor your baby&#8217;s naps: Allow your baby regular naps during the day and not large chunks of time that may cause your baby to stay wide awake at night.</p>
<p> &#8226; Follow a consistent bedtime routine: If you bath, cuddle, sing or read to your baby just before bedtime he or she will soon associate these activities with sleep.</p>
<p> &#8226; Put your baby to bed drowsy but awake: This technique helps your baby associate bed with the process of falling asleep. Place your baby to sleep on his or her back. Clear the crib or bassinet of blankets and other soft items.</p>
<p> &#8226; Give your baby time to settle down: If your baby fusses when you first put him to bed, allow him or her to find a comfortable position for falling asleep. If the crying does not stop within a reasonable amount of time, try speaking calmly to your baby and stroke his or her back to provide reassurance of your presence.</p>
<p> &#8226; Consider using a pacifier: If your baby has trouble settling down, try using a pacifier at naptime and bedtime to help reduce his anxiety. One problem of using a pacifier might be if he or she loses during the middle of the night and cries for its replacement. Guess who has to get up in the middle of the night to find the pacifier for baby?</p>
<p> &#8226; Expect frequent stirring at night: Don&#8217;t be alarmed if you hear your baby squirming and wriggle as they sleep. This is quite normal. Some babies can be noisy. All these things may simply be a sign of settling down. Unless you suspect your baby is hungry or uncomfortable (needing a diaper change or whatever), it is OK to wait a few minutes to see if he or she finally settles down. If not, then better check on baby.</p>
<p> &#8226; Keep nighttime care low-key: When you feed your baby or care for he or she during the night, use dim lights, a soft voice and very calm movements. This will teach your baby that it is time to sleep and nothing else.</p>
<p> Some babies sleep throughout the night the first night home. I know my baby slept through the night straight from the beginning of our nights at home. She was such a good baby I would always say.</p>
<p> However, not all babies are alike; respect your baby&#8217;s preferences. Take time to understand your baby&#8217;s schedule and ways of communicating. They will eventually settle down and sleep the whole night through. If your baby is still fussy at nighttime by age 6 months, ask your baby&#8217;s doctor for instruction and suggestions.</p>
<p> The goal here is for everyone to get a good night&#8217;s sleep. It is not a measure of your parental skill or a sign of a good or bad baby. I just always thought my baby was the absolute best at everything, and sleeping throughout the night was just one more reason I thought she was &#8220;perfect.&#8221; She has paid me back though as an adult, and what I got to say about her now is not the same&#8230;..At times I ask myself is this the same person I use to know as a baby, toddler and child?</p>

However, it is estimated that in the developing world up to 80 percent of illnesses and diseases are linked to poor access to safe drinking water and sanitation. No doubt this makes the reasons for testing your water quality fairly obvious.</p>
<p> It is understandable that not many people and even some countries don&#8217;t have access to sophisticated laboratories and highly trained technicians so are unable to find out what is in their water. Nevertheless, modern day technology has seen the introduction of home water test kits which are a quicker, easier and cheaper method of testing the water you are drinking.</p>
<p> The majority of people don&#8217;t realise that even household water supplies can be contaminated with harmful bacteria and in some areas, with high lead levels. Although this is unlikely to affect a healthy adult, the consequences can be dramatic for babies, children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with weak immune systems. Symptoms of contaminated water can range from not so serious cramps, nausea and diarrhoea to paralysis, brain and spinal cord damage and miscarriage. <p> You can be rest assured that all public water is tested however there are a number of ways that water can become contaminated between the treatment plant and your tap. It is important that water is tested at the point of use in order to get the most accurate reading of the quality of your drinking water. The best way to do this without using time &#8211; consuming and costly labs is with water test kits that you can use in your own home. They are usually easy to work and the results come back to you in a readable format so you don&#8217;t need to worry about being an expert in water quality testing.</p>
<p> Even if you have a private well you should be aware of the fact that contaminants seep into groundwater and can affect your drinking supply. Well water must be tested on a regular basis especially with the increase in the number of petrol stations, shopping centres, grazing, mining, oil exploration and forestry which all impair nature&#8217;s ability to purify water. </p>
<p> A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that their water is safe because they have a water filter. However there is no one filter that can correct every potential water problem. You can filter out minerals and still have bacteria which means that your water is still contaminated. A cheap filter can be even worse than no filter at all because it can become so loaded with bacteria in just a few weeks that what comes out of it may be worse than what you put in it.</p>
<p> The best way to test your water is with water test kits and it&#8217;s the simplest, easiest and cheapest way of being reassured that the water you are drinking is safe.</p>
